Managing Makerspaces

This semester I am attending an online course through the school of information called "managing makerspaces." A makerspace, also known as a fab lab or hackerspace, is a shared (often collaborative) work environment that offers equipment, training, and other resources for actualizing creative projects. Each of the projects I design in this course will be featured here.

Cardboard Challenge - For this fun little project, I made a dollhouse out of cardboard.  My grandmother, who has a lot of experience with crafts , helped me get started by explaining how to do the measurements and providing most of the materials. I ran into a few problems, especially with the roof size and fit, but overall it turned out great.Click on the image for detailed instructions.
Bristlebot - For our next assignment I made a tiny toothbrush robot. It was surprisingly simple, and fun to play with. All you need is a battery, motor, and some tape! Please click on the pdf below for more detailed instructions.

Origami Paper Circuit - Learn how to fold an origami plum blossom! Then, attach an LED light using a simple paper circuit and an LED battery. Follow the video and read the more detailed instructions below.

3D Printing - 3D design and printing is super easy, and the necessary equipment is more accessible now than ever. My husband is a big Warhammer fan (for the uninitiated, that is a popular tabletop game). I thought about making him a model, but decided to go a bit simpler for my first try at printing. I used the Tinkercad website to combine an already existing file with the above symbol (from the game) onto a coin. The symbol sticks out on both sides. The video above shows the printer at work, and the image is the final product. As always I have included more detailed instructions in the PDF file to the right of this text.
